Lut Desert

The Lut Desert is one of the largest and most expansive deserts, covering nearly 10% of Iran’s territory. This desert, one of the world’s hot and arid regions, spans approximately 120,000 square kilometers. Located in the southeast of Iran, the Lut Desert is known as Iran’s most pristine area. The word “Lut” in Baluchi, one of the Northwestern Iranian languages, means bare, waterless, dry, and devoid of everything. This vast desert encompasses parts of three vast provinces: Sistan and Baluchestan, South Khorasan, and Kerman.

The Lut Desert is the world’s largest uninhabited city and is recognized as one of the 27 major deserts globally. Key features of this vast desert include:

  1. Extremely High Temperatures: The Lut Desert attracts many people due to having some of the highest temperatures on Earth. Its temperature reaches around 159.3 degrees Fahrenheit (70.7 degrees Celsius).
  2. UNESCO World Heritage: The Lut Desert is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, confirming its unique and exceptional natural features.
  3. Breathtaking Sand Formations: This desert creates mesmerizing landscapes with vast sand masses, creating extraordinary and unnatural views. The intricate patterns formed by the wind on the golden sands create an extraordinary panorama.
