Naghsh-e Jahan Square
A famous square historically known as Shah Square and, after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, officially named Imam Square, is the central square of Isfahan, located in the heart of the historical Naghsh-e Jahan complex. It is a rectangular-shaped square amidst the beautiful city of Isfahan. The square is surrounded by buildings from the Safavid era, and historical landmarks in the square include Ali Qapu Palace, Imam Mosque, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, and Qeisarieh Portal.
One of the most famous attractions in Isfahan is Naghsh-e Jahan Square. It is an immense square and a legacy of the Safavid era. Naghsh-e Jahan Square is one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Iran, measuring 158 meters in width and 507 meters in length. It was registered with UNESCO in 1358 and was listed as a national heritage site in 1313 AH. This square is one of the places that reflects the unique and traditional texture of Isfahan, and visiting it will evoke a sense of the past. Moreover, you will become acquainted with various handicrafts of Isfahan and even learn how they are made. Throughout Naghsh-e Jahan Square, you will see shops in the bazaar promoting the art of enamelwork and calligraphy.
Aside from the buildings mentioned earlier that you can see in Naghsh-e Jahan Square, many structures have disappeared over time. These include marble columns, which are said to have been brought from Persepolis to Isfahan, and another building called Sa’at (Clock Tower), which is rebuilt in place of the damaged Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque.
