Saint Stephanos Church

Saint Stephanos Church, the second most important Armenian church in Iran after Qara Kelisa, holds significant importance. Located amidst the pristine and verdant nature of Julfa, it is considered one of the most beautiful and important attractions in East Azerbaijan province. Also known as Saint Stephanos or Saint At’panos, this church is situated 17 kilometers west of Julfa city and 3 kilometers from the southern shore of the sacred Aras River. Built in the 9th century AD, this church is revered by all Christians and even other religions. Besides being a place of worship for Christians, it has served as a meeting place for artists, philosophers, historians, scientists, and for the education and training of Christian priests and monks. Saint Stephanos Church was registered on Iran’s National Heritage List in 1341 and inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1386. Due to damage from an earthquake, the church underwent restoration and reconstruction during the Safavid period.
