Velvet weaving
Historical city of Kashan is one of the world’s tourist destinations that attracts the attention of domestic and foreign visitors every year. This region, with its several thousand years of history and geography, situated on the Silk Road, has been one of Iran’s ancient routes and with its famous scholars and artists, holds a valuable treasure trove of historical houses and handicrafts and arts. Here are some of the most important handicrafts introduced here.
Velvet weaving is one of the important handicrafts of Kashan, which is woven in two simple and embossed forms. This art began in the early Islamic period, but velvet weaving reached its peak during the Safavid period, weaving velvet with very beautiful designs and patterns. Velvet weaving is different from other weaves because the pile threads give the velvet weave a plush appearance, which makes the woven velvet show its nap color. This ancient art in the past was used to make prayer rugs, prayer rugs, Quran covers, chests, and even as clothing. Velvet weaving, like many of Iran’s authentic handicrafts, has been forgotten over time and is mostly decorative.
In the past, along with each workshop, several other jobs were also created, from making tools to producing raw materials, spinning and dyeing, painting and designing, and installing the machine. But now with the closure of these workshops, the employment opportunities for these individuals have also disappeared, and only a few of those who have experience and expertise in this profession are not employed to revive this art.
